The end of June, aka Read Caribbean Month, is approaching fast, but I didn’t want to miss this chance to celebrate the Caribbean’s rich and diverse literary heritage. This month is dedicated to highlighting the unique voices and cultural narratives from the Caribbean, offering Caribbean authors opportunities to share their distinct experiences with the world.
As we approach the end of Read Caribbean Month 2024, I am excited to spotlight two exceptional reads by authors I had the privilege of collaborating with last year. These books are not just stories; they are living testaments to the resilience, creativity, and spirit of the Caribbean, offering an authentic connection to the people.
Beyond My Smile: Rising Above Rejection by Delvon Campbell
The first book I want to introduce is Delvon Campbell’s memoir Beyond My Smile: Rising Above Rejection. This memoir, written by the American Jamaican author, is a deeply moving account of Campbell’s life journey, capturing the essence of his struggles and triumphs. Born in Jamaica, Delvon faced the heart-wrenching challenge of being abandoned as a child. His story of moving to America, navigating a new life, and rising above his past is beyond inspiring.
Delvon Campbell’s memoir is not just a story of survival but a powerful celebration of perseverance and the transformative power of a positive outlook. Through his candid “life-sharing-session”, readers are invited to walk alongside him, experiencing the lows and highs of being an orphan and witnessing the indomitable spirit that kept him smiling. Beyond My Smile is a beacon of hope for anyone facing rejection or adversity, reminding us that we can overcome even the most daunting challenges and continue to smile.
The House in the Middle by Kerry Waterman
The second book is The House in the Middle by British Bajan author Kerry Waterman. This Caribbean short story vividly portrays life in Barbados, capturing the essence of growing up with limited resources but abundant love and discipline. Waterman’s writing is a heartfelt homage to the values that shape the Caribbean spirit—resilience, family, and a strong sense of identity.
In The House in the Middle, Waterman transports readers to a world where material possessions are scarce, but the richness of life is found in relationships and personal growth. This short fictional book celebrates the strength of a tight-knit family unit and the determination to build a better future despite the odds. Through his evocative prose, Waterman paints a picture of a childhood that, while challenging, is filled with warmth and love, providing a foundation stronger than any material wealth.
Where to Find These Reads
These books are available on Amazon worldwide and not to be missed. They offer readers an authentic glimpse into the lives and experiences of Caribbean people, showcasing the unique challenges and triumphs that define this vibrant region. Beyond their compelling narratives, these books highlight essential themes of resilience, family, community, and personal growth, making them ever-green and inspiring for readers worldwide and from all walks of life.
